Sea of Thongs: Havaianas Australia Day Thong Challenge

Havaianas Australia Day Thong Challenge

Havaianas Australia Day Thong Challenge

Wearing thongs is as Australian as eating Vegemite. So on Australia Day January 26, giant inflatable thongs will take to iconic Australian beaches for the world record attempt at the number of people joined to create the longest line of inflatable thongs in the ocean.

Now in its 6th year, the Havaianas Thong Challenge was born along Sydney’s Coogee Beach with a world record of 863 people floating over hot pink inflatable airbeds in the shape of a giant thong. The event has since moved to the north end of Bondi Beach and includes beaches in Queensland, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia.

Registration opens at 7am with the activities starting from 9am. Three attempts at the world record will take place and in keeping with true Aussie style, there will be a barbecue.

So put on your best thongs, take along some Australiana memorabilia and head over to the participating beach in your state for a fun day out. There are plenty of photo opportunities for spectators before and during the world record attempt. And if you’re inclined to join in the world record attempt, the fee is $AUD25 if you register in advance. The giant inflatable thongs will be yours to keep and wear which ever way you like!

Errm, and flip flops in Britain too! :) What a fab event. Wish we were there to see it. I have to admit, when the Aussie backpackers hit Fethiye in the Springtime, we play, ‘Spot the Aussie.’ Anyone in flip flops – that’ll be an Aussie. We’re usually right. :)

Oh, is it? My English friends call them thongs – maybe for my sake! ;) Generally, Aussies on holidays are easy to spot. Either that, or I have an in-built radar!

It is a lot of fun to see the giant thongs all over the beach then on the water. I went there the first year and I’m hoping to make it this Australia Day as well!

This looks like a lot of fun! The only time I’ve spotted Aussies in the U.S. it was in bars. That may have something to do with me going to a lot of bars…..but the Aussies are always the last ones standing.

Hi Justin – it is a fun day, and feel free to check out the 2011 photos in the link above.
That wouldn’t surprise me about Aussies in bars… looks like you’re in good company! :)
